The European Science Foundation’s (ESF) Good Scientific Practice in Research and Scholarship (December 2000) is part of the Institute’s formal policy.

The Institute takes guidance on research ethics issues from the World Medical Association’s (WMA) Declaration on Helsinki: Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects (last amended 2004).

Freedom of Information
Following consideration by the North-South Ministerial Council of a draft Freedom of Information Code of Practice: North South Implementation Bodies and Tourism Ireland Ltd, the Institute’s management board will conform to the final code of practice.

In relation to data protection, the Institute conforms to the Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2003 (which gives effect to Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament) in Ireland and the Data Protection Act 1998 in Northern Ireland.
