An all-island body committed to tackling inequalities in health, the Institute of Public Health in Ireland announced today (Thursday, 19 January 2006) the establishment of an online version of two key public health information resources on the island.

In spite of eating less well, those on low incomes spend a much larger proportion of their income on food, the AGM of the Northern Ireland Public Health Alliance heard today as their Research Officer, Dr. Joanna Purdy presented findings from current research.

The main conclusion of the research is that there are systematic differences in what we eat based on how wealthy we are. Dr. Purdy said:

A new all-Ireland electronic library for public health will make finding information about the public's health, and the factors that affect it much easier.
 
As health is affected by so many factors, information about health tends to be dispersed over many different sites. The library brings together more than 400 resources including policies and strategies, research and evaluation reports, data sets and qualitative information - and will help those working in population health across the island.
